Steam Traps
The first major purpose of a steam trap is to maintain the highest possible efficiency of the steam system, by keeping the steam in the system until it has given up all of its energy and returned to condensate, at which point the condensate is drained from the system. The second important purpose of the steam trap is line drainage, the removal of small amounts of condensate formed through thermal losses across the pipe work. It is important to remove this condensate as it can be carried along by the steam and lead to water hammer, damaging valves, pipe work and other equipment. Many steam traps also incorporate a thermostatic element for the removal of air from the system. Steam traps are key components in the steam system and to be effective, they must provide:

• Offer - Minimal steam loss
• Give - Corrosion resistance
• Offer - Long life and give dependable service
• Give – Good air venting
• Provide - Operation against back pressure

Which Trap?

Thermodynamic Traps

• Pros: Simple Operation and Good drainage
  Cons : Blast action can be severe and always passes small amounts of live steam

Float Traps

• Pros: Can be used on most applications, it has high capacities and is good for air venting
  Cons : not good for outside use (risk of freezing) it can also be susceptible to water hammer and has limitations on pressure.

Inverted Bucket Traps

• Pros: Mains drainage and continuous steam systems.
  Cons : Bad at air venting on a on/off system (can stall or air lock) and it can also be susceptible to water hammer and has limitations on pressure.

Thermostatic Steam Traps - Air Eliminators

• Pros for bimetallic : Mains drainage, very robust and used on high pressure applications
  Cons : limited on applications where water logging can be a problem
• Pros for capsule : Mains drainage and good for venting air
  Cons :can be slow acting which may cause water logging and high cycle times can cause capsule failure.
